The Psychotropic House

XAP’s experimental project, The Psychotropic House, springs from J G Ballard’s short story ‘The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista’. The project began as part of Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects programme 2014, with a residency, exhibition and programme of events, including promenade performances, school open days, Big Draw family workshop and the Psychotropic House Symposium with guest speakers Jeremy Millar, Sheep Dalton, Meriel Jeater and Dean Kenning.

Visitors are encouraged to explore and interact with all the art works – a chance to touch, prod and play, to engage the senses beyond the visual.

“…curious echoes stirred through the memories embedded in the house. The responses were undefined, but somehow eerie and unsettling, like being continually watched over one’s shoulder, each room adjusting itself to my soft, random footsteps as if they contained the possibility of some explosive burst of passion or temperament.”
